Best Things to Do in Istanbul

Tour Details

Istanbul is one of those cities where you can spend several days and still feel that there is more to discover. The city is spread across two continents, and its neighbourhoods can feel completely different from one another.

For a first visit, the Old City is the natural place to begin. Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome, Topkapi Palace and the Grand Bazaar are all within a relatively manageable area and give you a good introduction to Istanbul's history.

But Istanbul is not only about monuments. A walk through Balat and Fener, a ferry ride across the Bosphorus, a visit to the Spice Bazaar or an afternoon around Kadıköy can show you a very different side of the city.

The Bosphorus is another experience we always recommend. You can take a public ferry, join a cruise or arrange a private boat depending on how you prefer to travel. Watching the city from the water gives you a completely different perspective.

Food should also be part of your Istanbul experience. From a simple breakfast in a local café to fresh fish, kebabs, meze and Turkish desserts, there is plenty to discover beyond the restaurants around the main tourist sights.

If you have more time, explore neighbourhoods such as Kuzguncuk, Ortaköy, Arnavutköy, Karaköy and Üsküdar. These are places where you can slow down, walk around and see how everyday life continues alongside the city's historic landmarks.

The best Istanbul experience is usually a combination of the famous sights and a little time away from the main tourist routes.
