Sümela Monastery & Zigana – Byzantine Heritage and Mountain Villages

This day trip takes you from Trabzon into the mountains around Maçka and Altındere, combining one of the region's most important historical monuments with the landscapes of the Zigana Mountains.

The main stop is Sümela Monastery, built into the cliffs of Altındere Valley. The monastery has a history of many centuries and was an important Greek Orthodox religious center in the region.

After visiting the monastery, we continue towards Zigana Mountain, following the mountain roads through forests and highland areas.

The route also includes Hamsiköy, a small mountain settlement known for its traditional rice pudding, locally called sütlaç. There is time to stop in the village and try the local dessert if you wish.
